Good afternoon,
As you know, CourseLeaf CLSS is still open for editing the Spring 2025 semester. You are in Refine Mode – Publish Phase. You may make changes up through the end of the day on Friday, January 24th, for Full Term and 1st Half of Term courses.
At this time, you should only be making very minor changes to your schedule. With that said, if your department offers any Research (RES) and Internship (INT) courses, one very important item needs your attention.
As Rice continues to offer more experiential learning opportunities, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) has asked us to help them collect some additional information on Research (RES) and Internship (INT) courses that have a substantial portion of class time dedicated to an instructor‐led group forum. A “group” is two or more students but not necessarily the whole class at any one time.
Updating Sections
CLSS has an attribute (“Group Research/Internship Sect”) that can be used to identify these sections. You should add the attribute if about half or more of the course sessions for any Research (RES) or Internship (INT) courses include instructor‐led group interaction. Please review your Spring 2025 semester schedules and add this attribute to sections as appropriate.
To add the attribute:
- Open the section
- Click the blue pencil icon next to Section Attributes
- Click the green plus icon
- Select the “Group Research/Internship Sect” attribute
- Click Accept
- Save Section and Submit to Workflow
The deadline to complete this is Friday, January 24th.
Why It’s Important
With this data, Rice will be able more accurately identify what is occurring in individual classes. This is important for: 1) external reporting because group research and internship courses can be included in certain counts/reports and 2) for research on the effect of these courses. It also allows Rice to accurately identify where collaboration efforts are being made by students. If this information is not gathered, those courses are excluded, which may not be beneficial for Rice.
