Good afternoon,

As you may be aware, the Faculty Senate approved the creation of the University Committee on General Education (UCGE) at the December 2025 Faculty Senate meeting. This committee has been charged with coordinating Distribution Credit courses at the university level, working alongside the existing School Course Review Committees (SCRCs).

To facilitate this charge, the process for reviewing and approving Distribution Credit has been updated. New course proposals requesting Distribution Credit and courses with substantial revisions for which Distribution Credit needs to be reevaluated will be reviewed and approved by the new UCGE after they have been reviewed by the school Dean and SCRC that houses the course. The course approval process will continue to occur in CourseLeaf as before, and this new step has been incorporated into the existing workflow.

To ensure that students know which courses count for Distribution Credit when the course schedule is released, the course proposal deadline for all new courses and for substantially changed courses has also been updated.

  • Spring semester: September 15
  • Summer semester: September 15
  • Fall semester: February 1

These deadlines have shifted earlier, so your internal planning and approval schedule may need to be altered. New course proposals from new hires will continue to be processed on a rolling basis, as needed.

Please note that existing courses seeking to add or remove Distribution Credit will still be processed annually in the spring semester as part of the Distribution Credit Roll Call process. An update on procedural revisions to that process will be sent out later this fall.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out:

  • UCGE and Distribution Credit approvals: Leslie Schwindt-Bayer
  • CourseLeaf: Justin Schilke

We appreciate your patience as we roll out this new process and work through the first cycle together.
